The Columbus Festival is based on a series of tourist entertainment initiatives that portray the period when this famous merchant resided on the island of Porto Santo, recalling his experiences in the Madeira Archipelago.
It takes place during the month of September in the city of Vila Baleira and features a series of initiatives that seek to commemorate the epic of the Portuguese Discoveries.
The event commemorates the Genoese navigator’s visit to the Golden Island and includes a craft market, themed exhibitions, street parades, circus performances, dramatizations, and plenty of music and exotic dances, ensuring constant entertainment and excitement among the various figures characteristic of the era.
Every night, at Praça do Barqueiro, the arrival of the Genoese navigator and his entourage on one of their visits to the Golden Isle is dramatized in a bustling atmosphere that includes courtesies and offerings to the donated captain, music, dance, and period-style street parades, as well as shows featuring local and regional artists, and culminating in a fireworks display.
