One of Madeira’s oldest traditions, the Festa dos Fachos dates back to the 16th–18th centuries, when fires were used to warn Machico of pirate attacks.
Today, giant torches shaped like boats, crosses, chalices and fish light up the hills around Machico on the last weekend of August, during the Festa do Santíssimo Sacramento.
After Mass, a conch shell signals the lighting of the torches, creating a spectacular display across the valley. The celebrations continue at Largo da Praça with music, food and drinks.

Tip: For the best view of all the torches lighting up at once, stay in town, especially around Largo da Praça.
