Bolo do Caco Typical and traditional from Madeira

Bolo do Caco is a typical regional sweet from Madeira Island. Although it was created on the island of Porto Santo, to reuse leftover dough from homemade bread, it ended up becoming one of the most popular starters (and later accompaniment to some dishes) in Madeira and beyond.

Bolo do Caco is round and flat in shape. It is enjoyed plain or, as is traditional, with garlic butter and parsley.

Given its popularity, its use has also been adapted for other dishes, such as hamburgers, steaks, salads, among others.

The name caco derives from the way it was made in the past: on top of a basalt stone (called a “caco”) on top of scalding embers.
