Sixteenth Century Market

Machico hosts the “Mercado Quinhentista” between June 5th to 7th, the 16th-century Market”, an event that evokes the historical period of the discovery of the island, which has gained a prominent cultural status.

Organized by the MQ – Mercado Quinhentista – Associação de Recreação Histórica de Machico, in partnership with the Elementary and Secondary Schools of Machico, this initiative takes place in Machico´s downtown at Largo da Praça, in Alameda Dr. José António de Almada, and offers a number of cultural and musical activities.

On 16 May, at the Fórum Machico, was be held the 18th Sixteenth century Colloquium, under the theme “Gentes do Povoamento: Ecos do Tombo”. This academic and cultural event encourages reflection on the historical origins of Machico´s community.
